Can I go to MN DMV without an appointment? ›

​The written class D knowledge test requires an appointment. Schedule online at drive.mn.gov. Commercial​ knowledge tests, motorcycle knowledge tests and all other types of knowledge tests do not require an appointment; they are available on a walk-in basis.

Walk-ins are not accepted. You can schedule an appointment online at drive.mn.gov or by calling us at 651-284-1000. We make appointments available 30 days in advance.

You will need to:

Complete a Minnesota driver's license application and provide your social security number. Present one primary and one secondary form of identification (see back). Present your driver's license from your previous state, this will be invalidated and returned to you if the road test is waived.

Test requirements and locations

Minnesota permit holders and non-driver individuals who don't have valid license from another state must: First take and pass a knowledge test at a metro area driver's exam stations. Schedule, take and pass the road test. Schedule or reschedule an exam or road test.

Once your license is expired, it is not valid for driving. If your license is more than 1 year, but less than 5 years expired, you'll need to pass a knowledge exam before renewing. If your Minnesota license is more than 5 years expired, you'll need to pass a knowledge AND skills exam before renewing.

If your Minnesota driver's license has been expired for more than one year from the expiration date, you will be required to retake the knowledge test at a DVS exam office.

Beginning Tuesday June 1st, 2021, new applicants for Real or Enhanced Identification need an appointment. You MUST follow these steps.

Go to drive.mn.gov and click on the link “Apply for a Driver's License or State ID” to renew this way. Remember, if your license expired since March 12 or will expire before July 31, an automatic extension was granted until Aug. 31 for those license expiration dates.

In Minnesota it says a Class A drivers license is $51.00 and a under 65 state ID is $21.50 as of August 1st 2021. Looks like Minnesota does not charge any extra for RealID endorsem*nt. If those are renew drivers licenses or state ID, it's $25.25 for a drivers license and $19.25 for a state ID.

REAL ID versus Enhanced DL / ID

The REAL ID is what is required at minimum to fly domestically. The Enhanced meets the REAL ID requirements, with the addition of land or sea border crossing. Come prepared: Review the list of required documents for REAL ID ( MN DPS )

Minnesotans can apply for their REAL ID now or after May 7, 2025. If you don't need a REAL ID right away, you do not need to ​apply for one by May 7, 2025.

DVS has a list of accepted documents. You will need an appointment to get the process started. Visit drive.mn.gov and click on “Schedule an Appointment." You can make an appointment up to 30 days out to apply for a driver's license and take the written test, which is available in multiple languages.

If you purchase registration for your vehicle prior to the end of the month in which registration is due, you have 10 days to display the new registration stickers. If purchased after the registration month is over, you do not have a grace period. For more information, visit the MNDOT website.
